چکیده

Grain-boundary relaxation in nanocrystalline Fe was studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy HREM , and its effect on plasticity was characterized by nanoindentation. Samples with grain size of 9.8 nm were synthesized by mechanical attrition and subsequently annealed at low temperatures 80 and 100 °C without affecting the grain size. While the hardness is not significantly affected by annealing, the strain-rate sensitivity peaks as a function of annealing time, suggesting two competing processes. HREM images show grain-boundary relaxation during annealing. Initially disconnected lattice planes were observed to evolve into a more continuous and ordered structure with regularly spaced grain-boundary dislocations. © 2006 American Institute of Physics. Finite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials

Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...

Plasticity of nanocrystalline alloys with chemical order: on the strength and ductility of nanocrystalline Ni–Fe

Plastic deformation and alloying of nanocrystalline Ni-Fe is studied by means of atomic scale computer simulations. By using a combination of Monte-Carlo and molecular dynamics methods we find that solutes have an ordering tendency even if grain sizes are in the nanometer regime, where the phase field of the ordered state is widened as compared to larger grain sizes. Tensile testing of disorder...

Emergence of localized plasticity and failure through shear banding during microcompression of a nanocrystalline alloy

Microcompression testing is used to probe the uniaxial stress–strain response of a nanocrystalline alloy, with an emphasis on exploring how grain size and grain boundary relaxation state impact the complete flow curve and failure behavior. The yield strength, strain hardening, strain-to-failure and failure mode of nanocrystalline Ni–W films with mean grain sizes of 5, 15 and 90 nm are studied u...

Nanocrystalline Alloys: Enhanced Strengthening Mechanisms and Mechanically-Driven Structural Evolution

Nanocrystalline materials have experienced a great deal of attention in recent years, largely due to their impressive array of physical properties. In particular, nanocrystalline mechanical behavior has been of interest, as incredible strengths are predicted when grain size is reduced to the nanometer range. The vast majority of research to this point has focused on quantifying and understandin...

Stress-assisted grain growth in nanocrystalline metals: Grain boundary mediated mechanisms and stabilization through alloying

The mechanisms of stress-assisted grain growth are explored using molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation in nanocrystalline Ni and Ni-1 at.% P as a function of grain size and deformation temperature. Grain coalescence is primarily confined to the high stress region beneath the simulated indentation zone in nanocrystalline Ni with a grain size of 3 nm. Grain orientation and atomic dis...
